My name is Jolene. I am an O negative blood type and I began donating blood when I was young. As I matured and began seeking assistance with infertility, I took a break from donating to focus on starting a family. In 2011, I gave birth to my daughter, our second child, conceived by IVF. Ten days after giving birth, I suffered postpartum hemorrhage. I was at the hospital for several hours, and had lost a lot of blood before I was finally taken in for emergency surgery by the on call obstetrician. They determined that my hemoglobin level was 43. I needed blood transfusion. When I woke from surgery, I was receiving my second bag of blood, and then a third. As I lay there, I remember feeling so grateful and thankful for the person(s) who’s blood was saving my life. O negative blood. It’s a precious thing. I reflected on my past donations, wondering how my blood might have helped someone as well and wondered if those recipients had the same thoughts I did. What an amazing feeling, to be able to help someone live. I don’t know who you are, but I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You gave me life and the opportunity to raise my family. I will continue to give back and pass on the gift of life. I’m scheduled for my 15th donation and to whomever receives my blood, just know, that it’s my pleasure to know that you get a second chance, just like I did.
