I had donated over 50 times when I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in my early 20s and was no longer permitted to donate. I would ask every 5 years or so if the rules changed but I was still prohibited. Since my diagnosis, our first born son arrived to us with Apert Syndrome and requires many surgeries. His major skull surgery at 9 mths old required enough transfusions to replace 3 times his blood volume. FINALLY last month type 1s are permitted to donate. And so, some 20 years later, I can finally donate again(and did so on May 27th) and couldn't be more proud to do so. I'm back in the saddle again and won't be getting off this horse anytime soon.
I can FINALLY donate again
