You only realize the importance of giving blood when it affects you

You only realize the importance of giving blood when it affects you.

Two years ago I was encouraged by my girlfriend to give blood. I do not like needles so I was very reluctant to try but am I ever glad I did. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd need some as a healthy 27 year old.

It happened six months ago while playing goalie in a soccer game. I had a collision with another player who inadvertently kicked me in my stomach. Immediately, I could hardly breathe and had to get to a hospital. They discovered I had internal bleeding to my liver and I was brought in for surgery right away. I had so much blood loss that i needed a total of 8 blood transfusions.

Eleven days later I left the hospital and three months later I was back to work. I have one year until I can donate blood again but I will donate blood the moment I can. I am ever so glad I started donating blood and will be a lifelong donor.

You never know if and when someone important to you will need blood. I do know that I'm grateful someone donated blood so I could use it when I was most in need. It saved my life.
